Minerals from the Elmwood Mine, Gordonsville Mine, and Cumberland Mine of the Elmwood (Middle Tennessee) District, Tennessee, USA

The Elmwood (Middle Tennessee) mining district was a major producer of mineral specimens, and has been argued by many serious collectors, museums, and educational institutions to produce some the finest quality calcites in the world. In addition to the calcites, excellent specimens of barite, fluorite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and dolomite are found in "bugholes" in the mines. These "bugholes" (nickname given locally by miners in reference to open cavities lined with crystals) range in size from just a few millimeters to huge caverns best compared to the size of a house or even larger. Some of the larger mineral pockets encountered contained calcite crystals so large they couldn't be removed from the mine intact.  The mines have recently ceased operations again largely due to the low price of zinc.  Future opening is uncertain at this time.

Sizes provided are in millimeters.  25 millimeters equals 1 inch, or 2.5 cm.

#Elmwood 449:  Measures 38 x 17 x 15 mm.  Large thumbnail that barely fits in the box that features several very small dark purple fluorite crystals on a sphalerite base.  One small rub or nick on the left side and typical contact to the edge but  not other damage.  $10.00

#Elmwood 450:  Measures 20 x 18 x 15 mm.  Partial but etched on base fluorite cube with good transparency and a light purple color.  There are also a few corners that have the optical regrowth "Carthage corners".  A couple of trivial nicks on a few edges - fine Elmwood fluorite thumbnail.  $12.00

#Elmwood 441:  Measures 32 x 15 x 14 mm.  Combination thumbnail with a single 10 mm sphalerite crystal and a 2.5 mm fluorite at upper right with associated dolomite.  There appears to be only a very small edge rub on one corner of the fluorite and a small rub or matrix residue on the edge of the sphalerite.  Nice thumbnail.  $10.00

#Elmwood 451:  Measures 30 x 20 x 12 mm.  A drusy dolostone base is host to a single red ruby-jack sphalerite crystal at left and also a small dark purple fluorite crystal cluster.  The back side of the fluorite cluster is cleaved and there is a small ding on one crystal edge on the left side of the cluster.  $10.00

#Elmwood 452:  Measures 15 x 15 x 11 mm.  Partial fluorite cube with some transparency that highlights some phantoms on the inside.  Corner damage on the bottom left part of the crystal and contacting on the back.  $8.00

#Elmwood 453:  Measures 17 x 17 x 16 mm.  Light purple fluorite cube with some associated dolostone and or quartz.  Contacting to the bottom left corner but no other problems besides the typical contacting/etching to the back.  $10.00

#Elmwood 454:  Measures 15 x 10 x 10 mm.  Small thumbnail featuring two fluorite crystals.  Just some minor contacting along the base.  $8.00

#Elmwood 455:  Measures 28 x 22 x 10 mm.  Single 9.5 mm fluorite cube is perched on the end of a dolostone matrix base.  The fluorite has a couple of very minor nicks on the upper corners but nothing major.  $12.00

#Elmwood 456:  Measures 14 x 13 x 11 mm.  Single partial fluorite cube with some barely visible phantoms on the inside.  Small corner nicks detract very little - you have to look really close to see these.  $10.00

#Elmwood 457:  Measures 26 x 19 x 15 mm.  A sphalerite base is nearly coated with small fluorite crystals.  A few nicks are found here and there on the fluorite but overall nothing major.  Nice thumbnail from the locality.  $10.00

Miniatures: These specimens range in size from 4 cm up to 7.5 cm in maximum dimension. Click on the images to see larger images.

Sizes provided are in centimeters and inches.  1 inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters.

#Elmwood 363:  Fluorite (etched) - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 7.5 x 4.5 x 3 cm (3 x 1.8 x 1.2 inches).  Typical etched fluorite from the Elmwood Mine - at least two main fluorite tips remain along with the classic "sno-cone" shape.  One area on the back looks to be slightly cleaved.  $20.00 on hold

#Elmwood 364:  Sphalerite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 6.5 x 3.5 x 1 cm (2.6 x 1.4 x 0.4 inches).  Brilliant sparkly small ruby-jack sphalerites heavily dot a thin dolostone plate.  A few larger sphalerites are also present.  Some contacting to a few of the larger sphalerites that are along the edge.  This type of specimen is difficult to photograph so the red color is a little more intense in the photos than in person.  $12.00

#Elmwood 365:  Calcite with Sphalerite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 3.5 x 2 cm, and is 5.5 cm tall (1.4 x 0.8 inches, 2.2 inches tall).  Singly terminated light yellow calcite with some associated sphalerite at the base.  A few rubs on edges and a slightly nicked/rubbed termination but overall in good shape.  $12.00

#Elmwood 373:  Calcite, Sphalerite on Dolostone - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Several small light orange calcites dot a drusy quartz coated dolostone matrix base.  Massive sphalerite is found on the back.  Some tipping and contacts to a few crystals as is typical of nearly all of these.  Photos do not depict the specimen the best.  Measures 3 x 1 cm (1.2 x 0.4 inches) and is 4 cm (1.6 inches) tall.  $10.00

#Elmwood 374:  Calcite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Doubly-terminated and twinned calcite crystal.  Specimen exhibits classic twinning on {0001} for the locality.  Minor nicking on both terminations which is typical for the location.  Color is slightly more orange than shown here.  Measures 7.5 x 4 x 2.3 cm (3 x 1.6 x 0.9 inches).  $16.00

#Elmwood 375:  Calcite with bitumen and dolostone - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Cluster of light yellow calcites with associated bitumen drops and some dolostone matrix on the back.  Typical tipping to the upper terminations and some barite remains are found on the base.  Measures 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 cm (1.8 x 1.2 x 1 inches).  $12.00

#Elmwood 376:  Calcite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Doubly-terminated and twinned calcite crystal with a good orange color very typical of the Elmwood Mine.  There was another crystal attached to the back of this one and this did leave a bald area that, in my opinion, does detract from the specimen because it offsets the symmetry to the specimen.  Some very light tipping to the terminations.  Measures 6.2 x 3 x 2.5 cm (2.5 x 1.2 x 1 inches).  $15.00

#Elmwood 377:  Calcite with minor Fluorite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Doubly-terminated calcite crystal with some associated mostly massive fluorite on the back of the piece.  Typical nicking and tipping to the terminations and some contact areas are present on the back.  Measures 5.5 x 2.5 x 2 cm (2.2 x 1 x 0.8 inches).  $10.00

#Elmwood 371:  Calcite, Sphalerite, Fluorite, and Barite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 4.2 x 2 x 5 cm tall (1.7 x 0.8 inches and is 2 inches tall).  Nice small miniature combination specimen featuring a nearly 2 inch (5 cm) tall calcite crystal that just has a little rub wear on its termination.  Some barite is found on the back side of the calcite.  A fluorite crystal is present on the sphalerite base.  Neat miniature specimen with virtually no damage.  $15.00

#Elmwood 378:  Calcite on Fluorite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 2.5 x 1.5 cm and is 3 cm tall (1 x 0.6 inches, 1.2 inches tall).  Borderline thumbnail/miniature sized specimen featuring several calcite crystals on a fluorite cluster.  Some of the calcites are contacted and there is contacting to the back of the fluorite but still a nice association for the locality.  $12.00

Cabinets: These specimens are 7.5 to 15 cm in dimension. Click on the images to see larger specimen views.

Sizes provided are in centimeters and inches.  1 inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters.

#Elmwood 242:  Calcite on Sphalerite on Dolostone - Cumberland Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures  11.5 x 9.5 x 3.5 cm (4.5 x 3.7 x 1.4 inches).  Several mostly doubly terminated orange transparent calcite crystals are nearly coating a sphalerite coated dolostone chunk.  The calcites are mostly under 1 cm (0.4 inches) in length from tip to tip.  Some missing terminations and chips along the edge of the specimen as one would expect, but no major or significant damage away from the edges of the piece.  Good color and presentation.  These type of specimens were always very easy to acquire given the smaller crystal size and likely higher abundance of such specimens.  Not all had really good color to the crystals, however compared to this one.  $50.00

#Elmwood 243:  Calcite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 9 x 5 cm, 9 cm tall (3.5 x 2 inches, 3.5 inches tall).  A partial calcite crystal with a little attached cluster makes up the whole of this specimen.  The specimen is likely just the end of a larger calcite crystal given the cleaves at the base.  Specimen does sit up as shown, mainly due to these cleaves.  The upper termination is slightly tipped and not totally crisp as was the case with nearly but not all calcites from this mining district.  Color is very accurate as shown in the photos.  $35.00

#Elmwood 254:  Fluorite with bitumen - Gordonsville Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 14 x 8 x 4 cm (5.5 x 3.2 x 1.6 inches).  Excellent cluster of intergrown fluorite crystals with a greyish purple characteristic of a large pocket of these fluorites found in the Gordonsville Mine in 2001.  The crystals exhibit the regrowth Carthage corners and bitumen is present as a speckled inclusion throughout the specimen.  One corner on the left side of the specimen has a nick but otherwise no human damage - quite a bit of natural etching on back and sides.  $45.00

#Elmwood 255:  Barite, Fluorite on Sphalerite - Gordonsville Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 11.2 x 8 x 3.5 cm (4.4 x 3.2 x 1.4 inches).  A sphalerite base is host to a barite cluster on the left side and very dark purple fluorite crystals.  The barite is approximately 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) across and has a few rubs here and there.  The fluorites have a little more significant damage in the form of cleaves.  This is not really a collector specimen but more of a reference and combination specimen from the district.  $25.00

#Elmwood 256:  Fluorite with bitumen - Gordonsville Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 8 x 5 x 3 cm (3.2 x 2 x 1.2 inches).  Two fluorite cubes with a light grey/purple color and bitumen inclusions make up the whole of the specimen.  Natural etching and a little bit of remnant host dolostone on the back.  A small nick on one crystal edge - this is present in the upper edge.  Nice small cabinet fluorite.  $25.00

#Elmwood 257:  Calcite on Barite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 10 x 6.5 x 3 cm (3.9 x 2.6 x 1.2 inches).  A couple of intergrown light yellow calcites are present on the end of the barite.  The tip of the calcite is nicked.  Specimen displays nicely.  No damage to the barite.  $25.00

#Elmwood 258:  Fluorite with bitumen - Gordonsville Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 10.7 x 6 x 8 cm (4.2 x 2.4 x 3.2 inches).  Partial fluorite cube with a greyish/purple color along with bitumen inclusions.  The process of natural etching is present in this specimen as there is no human induced damage at all - the base of the specimen was slowly being eaten away.  The upper Carthage corner is pretty large and well-defined.  From a large find of these fluorites in the Gordonsville Mine in 2001.  $40.00

#Elmwood 259:  Calcite with minor Sphalerite - Cumberland Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 10 x 4.7 cm, 8.5 cm tall (3.9 x 1.85 inches, 3.35 inches tall).  Partial calcite crystal with the classic rich orange color from this mine along with some associated sphalerite.  This is likely just the upper termination of a much larger calcite as the base shows cleaves.  A nick along a crystal edge is present on each side but overall not too bad of shape.  $30.00

#Elmwood 260:  Calcite with Barite on Sphalerite - Elmwood Mine, Smith County, Tennessee:  Measures 8.5 x 6 x 6 cm (3.35 x 2.4 x 2.4 inches).  Nice combination specimen dominated by a 8 cm (3.2 inch) calcite crystal that has a complete termination on the right but a "stopped" termination on the left side (grew into a barite ball).  A smaller calcite is present on top.  Sphalerite is present on the back and a barite section serves as the base and allows the specimen to display as shown.  Very slight tipping on right termination but otherwise damage free.  $30.00

Large Cabinet/Museum: These specimens are larger than 15 cm (6 inches). Click on the images to see additional larger-sized pictures along with a detailed description.
