Minerals from Romania - The Geode Gallery
The mines in Romania have a very rich and lengthy mining heritage. More than 100 confirmed mineral species have been identified in the Maramures District in northern and northwestern Romania alone. In recent years, however, the mines have slowed in production with our latest contact in the area saying that some or all of the mines are now closed and the mines are filling up with water. We buy direct from miners and collectors in or near the mining district so continue to check back or request to be put on our mailing list for new but likely fluctuating postings of material to this page by sending us an e-mail.

#Romania 48 - Calcite on Matrix - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm (2 x 1.4 x 1 inches) - $5.00 |
Quartz coated matrix plate is host to several globular groups of calcite that have been included with jamesonite giving the darker grey/black color. Classic Herja calcite - the "orbs" are anywhere from 2.5 - 3 cm (1 - 1.2 inches) across. Some contacting is present on the edge of the specimen in the upper right corner and the bottom left corner. $50.00 |
Nice miniature featuring mainly a 3cm calcite, but many calcites are grown together. $5.00 |
#Romania 126 - Quartz, Sphalerite, and Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 11.5 x 7 x 2.5 cm (4.5 x 2.8 x 1 inches) - $50.00 |

#Romania 81 - Calcite, Pyrite on Quartz - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 23 x 18 x 3 cm (9 x 7 x 1.2 inches) - $150.00 |
Cabinet sized combination specimen featuring a crystallized sphalerite base making up the whole of the specimen but some quartz crystal clusters and a single calcite are also present and add some contrast to the black sphalerite. Sphalerite crystals are very lustrous and measure up to 2.2 cm (0.9 inches). Closeup of dominant sphalerite lower left. Only damage is typical rubbing or contact to edge and base. $50.00
Very nice large cabinet specimen that is of the typical variety from the Cavnic area. This specimen, despite its size, has virtually no damage whatsoever (looks like one of the calcite blades may be sheared off), but I could not find anything else wrong with the specimen. Calcite overgrew the quartz underneath, and pyrites or chalcopyrites are also found. $150.00 |
#Romania 92 - Galena, Siderite, Chalcopyrite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 10.5 x 6.5 x 3 cm (4.1 x 2.5 x 1.2 inches) - $40.00 |
#Romania 94 - Sphalerite on Galena - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 7.5 x 5.5 x 3 cm (2.9 x 2.15 x 1.2 inches) - $50.00 |
Combination specimen from the Turt Mine featuring several galena crystals "poking" their way up through a siderite base. A small chalcopyrite cluster is also found near one of the galena crystals (see bottom picture). The galenas are the typical cube-octahedral structure from this mine, and are anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 cm (0.2 to 0.6 inches). Typical but still interesting combination specimen from this mine. $40.00 |
Several galenas are found perched on the brownish matrix typical for the Turt Mine, and on top of the galenas are numerous very lustrous sphalerite crystals. The galenas are up to 1.6 cm (0.6 inches) across. A couple of either very minor contacts or old contacts (doesn't look fresh) are found on a couple of the galenas at far right but definitely nothing major. A fine combination specimen from a 2005 find. $50.00

#Romania 98 - Galena, Siderite, Chalcopyrite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 10.5 x 7.5 x 4.5 cm (4.1 x 2.9 x 1.8 inches) - $50.00 |
#Romania 99 - Galena, Siderite, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 10.5 x 9 x 2.5 cm (4.1 x 3.5 x 1 inches) - $40.00 |
A cluster of galena crystals makes up the balance of the specimen with a layer of siderite crystals on top of a portion of the specimen. Along the edge and base a few chalcopyrite crystals are also present along with sphalerite and quartz. Some contacting and cleaving is present to some galenas along the edge of the specimen and a few crystals not on the edge of the specimen are also contacted but nothing overly significant in my opinion given the nature of galena. Crystal size up to 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) across an edge. $50.00 |
Cluster of galena crystals with associated brown siderite. The galena crystals are a steel gray color with the only real contacting/cleaving to crystals along the left edge of the specimen. The base has the typical pyrite and chalcopyrite for the mine. Crystal sizes up to 2 cm (0.8 inches). $40.00

#Romania 100 - Calcite with Siderite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 13 x 10 x 5 cm (5.1 x 3.9 x 2 inches) - $50.00 |
#Romania 101 - Galena - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania - Measures 7 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm (2.7 x 1.4 x 1 inches) - $15.00 |
Cluster of calcite crystals in association with siderite. Due to the weight, this one is most likely not a pseudomorph or epimorph like the majority of specimens available from this mine that are pseudomorphs or epimorphs of siderite after calcite. Minor contact to a little extension of calcite at the top left - this could easily be trimmed off. Otherwise, just a few very, very minor rubs near the specimen edges. $50.00
Small cabinet cluster of galena crystals on the typical chalcopyrite/pyrite matrix base from this mine. Typical contacting along the edges, but overall just a nice small cabinet sized cluster of steel grey galenas. $15.00
#Romania 103 - Calcite, Pyrite on Quartz/Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 13 x 6.5 x 4.5 cm (5.1 x 2.5 x 1.8 inches) - $50.00 |
#Romania 105 - Quartz (var. Amethyst): Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 12.5 x 6 x 5 cm (4.9 x 2.3 x 2 inches) - $40.00 |
Cluster of a quartz/calcite mix base is host to several pyrite and clear calcite crystals, some that are doubly-terminated. Despite the positioning of the calcites on the specimen, just a small cluster at the far right of the specimen are rubbed in an elevated area. Overall an excellent association from the Boldut Mine with the typical "weird" quartz/calcite, etc. base. $50.00 |
Cluster of amethyst crystals from older finds at the Boldut Mine, most likely in the 1960s or 1970s according to the former owner. There is damage to some crystal points so it is better listed as a good reference specimen of more historical value or to add to a suite of Romania specimens. $40.00

#Romania 110: Pyrite and Galena - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 6.5 x 5.5 x 4 cm (2.5 x 2.15 x 1.6 inches) - $20.00 |
#Romania 107 - Quartz (var. Amethyst) with Siderite and a few Chalcopyrites - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 7 x 4.5 x 2.5 cm (2.7 x 1.8 x 1 inches) - $45.00 |
A chunk of massive sphalerite or zinc contains two layers of pyrite, one on top and the other on the bottom. Both layers have varying crystal sizes with the top part of the specimen having larger crystals (up to 5mm or so) and the bottom layer more of a druse. A couple of galenas are also present on the end with larger crystals. Typical contact along the edges. $20.00 |
A siderite and chalcopyrite base is host to a grouping of several amethyst crystals. A few notable pockets of amethysts were found in the Turt Mine during production along with the galenas, calcites, and siderites. The crystals are anywhere from 1.5 to 3 cm (0.6 to 1.2 inches) in length, with the largest crystal in the front just over 3 cm (1.2 inches) in length. One crystal was broken off in the middle of the specimen, but actually it broke off flush with the siderite base and is not seen when displayed as shown in the upper left photograph despite its location. The backs of the amethysts are coated with siderite. $45.00

#Romania 113 - Pyrrhotite, Quartz, Chalcopyrite, Siderite on Sphalerite: Herja Mine (Kisbanya), Baia Mare (Nagybanya), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 15.5 x 8.5 x 3 cm (6 x 3.3 x 1.2 inches) - $100.00 |
#Romania 127 - Siderite on/after Pyrrhotite with Calcite - Herja Mine (Kisbanya), Baia Mare (Nagybanya), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 14.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 cm (5.7 x 3 x 1 inches) - $35.00 |
A base of massive sphalerite is host to crystallized sphalerite that is topped with numerous clusters of pyrrhotite along the edge of the specimen, and also a cluster of quartz crystals with a few scattered areas of siderite and chalcopyrite. For the size of the specimen, it is virtually damage free with the only damage areas I can locate being contacting along the edges of the specimen and a few broken quartz crystals in the quartz cluster. The pyrrhotite clusters are up to 2cm across. A fine cabinet to borderline large cabinet specimen from Romania in a good combination. $100.00 |
Several intergrown pyrrhotite crystals with an association of siderite either on and/or after the pyrrhotite makes up the balance of the specimen. Several additional calcite crystals are scattered about the top of the specimen. Not a particularly aesthetic specimen but interesting scientifically and would make a nice addition to a Romanian suite given the combination of crystallization present. Only damage is slight contacting to a few crystals on the edge of the specimen but there really is no "edge" to speak of. $35.00

#Romania 115: Dolomite casts after Calcite with Quartz - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 13.5 x 9 x 7 cm (5.3 x 3.5 x 2.8 inches) - $45.00 |
#Romania 128 - Rhodochrosite with Quartz - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 12 x 8 x 4 cm (4.7 x 3.2 x 1.6 inches) - $75.00 |
Interesting specimen featuring a dome-like cast of dolomite after calcite with successive growth stages underneath. Small crack in upper replacement shell as seen in closeup photo at bottom left but specimen is more than stable and crack does not proceed very far into the specimen. Some quartz in association. $45.00 |
Chunky matrix base host to a thick rhodochrosite druse with mixed quartz crystals on the top. Slightly more pink in color than shown in the photos. Only damage is typical contact to the edges. Fine example of rhodochrosite from this mine in Romania. $75.00
#Romania 117: Barite - Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 9 x 7 x 3 cm (3.5 x 2.8 x 1.2 inches) - $45.00 |
#Romania 118: Siderite after Calcite with minor Pyrite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 8.5 x 8 x 4 cm (3.35 x 3.2 x 1.6 inches) - $25.00 |
Cluster of intergrown clear/grey/white barite crystals. One crystal at upper left is cleaved but only other damage is typical contacting mainly along the base. Specimen could use a little bit of cleaning as it has been in storage for several years. $45.00 |
Typical siderite after calcite with some associated pyrite on the back side from this mine. Specimen was mined in 2005. The pseudomorph of siderite after calcite is very much evident given the hollow nature of the crystals underneath the siderite. Minor chip on the upper right corner but no other damage. $25.00
#Romania 119: Calcite & Siderite on matrix - Herja Mine (Kisbanya), Baia Mare (Nagybanya), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 22 x 11 x 5 cm (8.7 x 4.3 x 2 inches) - $200.00 |
#Romania 120: Quartz after Calcite with Pyrite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 11 x 8 x 8 cm (4.3 x 3.2 x 3.2 inches) - $20.00 |
Fine large cabinet specimen featuring curved calcite rhombs from 1 to 3.5 cm (0.4 to 1.4 inches) across in association with siderite on matrix. Despite the size of the specimen, there are only a few minor chips and rubs on a few calcite crystals and these are mainly confined to the edge of the specimen. Nice addition to a Romanian suite. $200.00
Typical quartz after calcite cast specimen with associated pyrite from the Boldut mine. This is more of a reference specimen as there is a fairly significant contact or damage area at the upper right of the specimen that really detracts overall from the piece. $20.00 |
#Romania 121: Siderite after Calcite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 14.5 x 10 x 5 cm (5.7 x 3.9 x 2 inches) - $60.00 |
#Romania 122: Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite, Pyrite - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 10 x 7 x 2.5 cm (3.9 x 2.8 x 1 inches) - $30.00 |
Excellent example of siderite after calcite pseudomorph with a rich tan brown color from finds in 2005 at this mine. The only damage is a little bit of contact to the edges of the specimen but otherwise excellent display. $60.00
A mostly massive with some crystallized pyrite serves as the base for chalcopyrite and a few sphalerite crystals. The chalcopyrites are well formed with the largest crystal centered and dominating the specimen as a whole. No damage besides typical contact to the base. Some malachite present on the back side indicating weathering product of the chalcopyrite. $30.00 |
#Romania 123: Siderite after Calcite with Galena - Gheturi Mine, Turt, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 14 x 10 x 3 cm (5.5 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches) - $100.00 |
#Romania 124: Calcite with Dolomite and Pyrite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnik), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 14 x 11 x 4 cm (5.5 x 4.3 x 1.6 inches) - $100.00 |
Excellent heavy cabinet sized specimen featuring mostly massive galena as the "matrix" or base, with crystallized galena peeking through where siderite ps. calcite crystals are not present. Classic Gheturi mine specimen from finds in 2005. Little damage - typical contact and cleaves seen to galena on the edge and a few very small scuffs to some siderite/calcite crystals here and there but for the size it is is good shape. $100.00 |
Classic Boldut mine specimen featuring calcite/dolomite "mounds" covering a massive sphalerite base. Some of the mounds are hollow and indicate a dolomite after calcite pseudomorph situation. Small micro pyrites dot the mounds on the entire specimen. I see one small rub on one mound toward the bottom of the piece and a few other very small rubs near the edge of the specimen but overall in excellent shape. Nice display specimen as you cannot see the sides. $100.00 |
#Romania 129 - Calcite with Jamesonite inclusions - Herja Mine (Kisbanya), Baia Mare (Nagybanya), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 20 x 16 x 4 cm (7.9 x 6.3 x 1.6 inches) - $200.00 |
#Romania 130 - Quartz casts after Calcite with Barite - Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 23 x 12 x 4 cm (9.1 x 4.7 x 1.6 inches) - $150.00 |
Large cabinet specimen of calcite, most of which has been included with jamesonite causing the darker color. The specimen is a near floater as the only attachment points are on the small edge at back and a small area attached to the whiter calcite. The back side is all calcite with jamesonite inclusions (bottom right picture). Some minor scuffs are seen on the highest relief areas of the specimen and on the edges but no other damage is present. Fine large cabinet specimen from this Romanian location. $200.00 |
Quartz with a light orange color due to iron staining serves as casts over what was likely former calcite. The drusy coating is host to a scattering of clusters of barite crystals. The barites are not large per crystal (mainly at or below 1 cm or 0.4 inches on edge) but many crystals in clusters all over the specimen makes for a nice effect. Given the somewhat brittle nature of the barites, a few crystals are broken but nothing major. Interesting specimen from Romania. $150.00 |
#Romania 131 - Quartz with Pyrite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania: Measures 13.5 x 9 x 5 cm (5.3 x 3.5 x 2 inches) - $60.00 |
Beautiful aesthetic cluster of quartz crystals with associated pyrite. The quartz crystals range in lengths from a few millimeters up to 3 cm (1.2 inches). Small pyrites are seen peeking up in between quartz crystals on the matrix base. Only a couple of the larger quartz crystals have any damage and they are on the edge of the specimen - some smaller crystals on the back side (out of view) are sheared off but the bulk of this specimen is damage free. This is a good quartz from the Boldut Mine. $60.00 |
