Romania Mineral Specimens

The mines in Romania have a very rich and lengthy mining heritage.  More than 100 confirmed mineral species have been identified in the Maramures District in northern and northwestern Romania alone.  In recent years, however, the mines have slowed in production with our latest contact in the area saying that some or all of the mines are now apparently closed.  We buy direct from miners and collectors in or near the mining district, so continue to check back or request to be put on our mailing list for new but likely fluctuating postings of material to this page by sending us an e-mail.

To order, choose one of the options provided above the minerals to place your order.  If paying with a credit card, call Mike at the number provided.  All orders will have a variable postage charge through Priority mail with insurance in the USA, or by airmail outside of the USA.  For complete ordering instructions, click on "Ordering Information" below.  Thanks for visiting the page and enjoy the diversified selection of minerals from Romania.  If you have special requests, feel free to contact us as we have additional specimens not posted to this page and will always have a fine selection available at shows as well.

#Romania 84 - Quartz - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10 x 7 x 2 cm (3.9 x 2.7 x 0.8 inches):  A nice small hand-sized quartz specimen.  Most crystals are around 1.5 to 2 cm in length.  Very slight contact to crystals right along the edge, a touch of iron present as shown on the right side.  $20.00

#Romania 48 - Calcite on Matrix - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm (2 x 1.4 x 1 inches):  Nice miniature featuring mainly a 3cm calcite, but many calcites are grown together.   $5.00

#Romania 85 - Quartz & Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10.5 x 7 x 5 cm (4.1 x 2.7 x 2 inches):  Very nice "mound-like" specimen of quartz/calcite overlying calcite.  Some small pyrites are also present.  $20.00 sold

#Romania 76 - Pyrite, Quartz on Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10 x 10 x 4.5 cm (3.9 x 3.9 x 1.8 inches):  A fine cabinet specimen that contains quartz that has either coated or replaced the underlying calcite, then a scattering of pyrites all over the quartz. The pictures do not give this specimen much justice.  $40.00 sold

#Romania 70 - Quartz & Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 16 x 12 x 4 cm (6.2 x 4.7 x 1.6 inches):  A specimen that looks like it is from Colorado and not from Romania. If you look at the specimen from one way, you see the natural quartz crystals, but look at it from the other way and calcite has covered the quartz crystals. Quite common in many quartz specimens from the Cavnic area. It looks like a few quartz crystals are tipped along the edge, but for the size of the specimen it is very, very clean.  $50.00

#Romania 81 - Calcite, Pyrite on Quartz - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 23 x 18 x 3 cm (9 x 7 x 1.2 inches):  Very nice large cabinet specimen that is of the typical variety from the Cavnic area.  This specimen, despite its size, has virtually no damage whatsoever (looks like one of the calcite blades may be sheared off), but I could not find anything else wrong with the specimen.  Calcite overgrew the quartz underneath, and  pyrites or chalcopyrites are also found.   $150.00

#Romania 90 - Calcite, Quartz, Chalcopyrite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 14 x 10 x 4.5 cm (5.5 x 3.9 x 1.8 inches):  A specimen that is mostly the classic bladed calcites with a fine druse on the majority of the specimen.  Some minor chalcopyrite crystals are found scattered about (mostly in very small crystal size) with a cluster of larger crystals at the bottom left.  Some contacting along the edges of the specimen (especially the left edge) to the calcite and one of the crystals is broken off at the bottom left but nothing out of the ordinary given the location of the crystal in reference to the edge of the specimen.  Nice cabinet-sized specimen from this important mine.  Front, closeup, and backside view shown.  $50.00 sold

#Romania 91 - Marcasite on Pyrite, Dolomite, Quartz - Herja Mine (Kisbanya), Baia Mare (Nagybanya), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 14 x 7.5 x 2.5 cm (5.5 x 2.9 x 1 inches):  Good combination specimen from the Herja Mine.  A fine druse of marcasites coats the majority of the specimen which is pyrite, and a few quartz crystals with dolomite are scattered about the specimen.  The quartz crystals range in size from 1-1.5cm (0.4-0.6 inches) in length.  Some minor edge contact but display surface is damage free.  $40.00 sold

#Romania 92 - Galena, Siderite, Chalcopyrite - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10.5 x 6.5 x 3 cm (4.1 x 2.5 x 1.2 inches): Combination specimen from the Turt Mine featuring several galena crystals "poking" their way up through a siderite base.  A small chalcopyrite cluster is also found near one of the galena crystals (see bottom picture).  The galenas are the typical cube-octahedral structure from this mine, and are anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 cm (0.2 to 0.6 inches).  Typical but still interesting combination specimen from this mine.  $50.00

#Romania 97 - Sphalerite on Galena - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 11.5 x 7.5 x 4 cm (4.5 x 2.9 x 1.6 inches):  Combination specimen featuring mostly galena covered rather heavily by lustrous but not super-lustrous sphalerite crystals as was seen in some other specimens (like Romania 94 above) from the same find made in 2005 at the Turt Mine.  Most of the specimen is dominated by a 5.5 cm (2.15 inch) galena on edge with smaller crystals attached.  The sphalerites add a nice touch and association to the specimen.  Since most of the specimen is galena, there is contacts evidenced by bright shiny cleavages at especially the left end and to the base, the extent of damage visible in the photos.  $65.00 sold

#Romania 94 - Sphalerite on Galena - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 7.5 x 5.5 x 3 cm (2.9 x 2.15 x 1.2 inches):  Several galenas are found perched on the brownish matrix typical for the Turt Mine, and on top of the galenas are numerous very lustrous sphalerite crystals.  The galenas are up to 1.6 cm (0.6 inches) across.  A couple of either very minor contacts or old contacts (doesn't look fresh) are found on a couple of the galenas at far right but definitely nothing major.  A fine combination specimen from a 2005 find.  $65.00

#Romania 98 - Galena, Siderite, Chalcopyrite - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10.5 x 7.5 x 4.5 cm (4.1 x 2.9 x 1.8 inches):  A cluster of galena crystals makes up the balance of the specimen with a layer of siderite crystals on top of a portion of the specimen.  Along the edge and base a few chalcopyrite crystals are also present along with sphalerite and quartz.  Some contacting and cleaving is present to some galenas along the edge of the specimen and a few crystals not on the edge of the specimen are also contacted but nothing overly significant in my opinion given the nature of galena.  Crystal size up to 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) across an edge.  $60.00

#Romania 99 - Galena, Siderite, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10.5 x 9 x 2.5 cm (4.1 x 3.5 x 1 inches):  Cluster of galena crystals with associated brown siderite.  The galena crystals are a steel gray color with the only real contacting/cleaving to crystals along the left edge of the specimen.  The base has the typical pyrite and chalcopyrite for the mine.  Crystal sizes up to 2 cm (0.8 inches).  $50.00

#Romania 100 - Calcite with Siderite - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 13 x 10 x 5 cm (5.1 x 3.9 x 2 inches):  Cluster of calcite crystals in association with siderite.  Due to the weight, this one is most likely not a pseudomorph or epimorph like the majority of specimens available from this mine that are pseudomorphs or epimorphs of siderite after calcite.  Minor contact to a little extension of calcite at the top left - this could easily be trimmed off.  Otherwise, just a few very, very minor rubs near the specimen edges.  $60.00

#Romania 101 - Galena - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania - Measures 7 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm (2.7 x 1.4 x 1 inches):  Small cabinet cluster of galena crystals on the typical chalcopyrite/pyrite matrix base from this mine.  Typical contacting along the edges, but overall just a nice small cabinet sized cluster of steel grey galenas.  $15.00

#Romania 109 - Quartz pseudomorph after Calcite with Bournonite and Sphalerite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10 x 9.5 x 8 cm (3.9 x 3.7 x 3.1 inches):  Interesting specimen of a calcite cast remaining behind after pseudomorphing to quartz.  Rather typical and common association from this mine - the interior of the specimen (bottom two photos) shows the numerous growth stages of calcite and the hollowed out nature of the specimen.  On the surface or outside where there is now a layer of quartz are several crystals of sphalerite and bournonite crystals, some that have been partially coated over with quartz.  No damage to the specimen.  $75.00 sold

#Romania 103 - Calcite, Pyrite on Quartz/Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 13 x 6.5 x 4.5 cm (5.1 x 2.5 x 1.8 inches):  Cluster of a quartz/calcite mix base is host to several pyrite and clear calcite crystals, some that are doubly-terminated.  Despite the positioning of the calcites on the specimen, just a small cluster at the far right of the specimen are rubbed in an elevated area.  Overall an excellent association from the Boldut Mine with the typical "weird" quartz/calcite, etc. base.  $50.00

#Romania 104 - Chalcopyrite, Quartz, Dolomite, Malachite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 11 x 6.5 x 4.5 cm (4.3 x 2.5 x 1.8 inches):  A "ball" of chalcopyrite makes up the balance of the specimen, but associated quartz crystals along the edges and dolomite on top are also present.  The chalcopyrite cluster has started to weather in a few places, evidenced by greenish malachite growth.  The quartz crystals are up to 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) in length.  Some contacting is present along the edges and of course on the base of the specimen where it was removed from the host rock, but when displayed as shown in the top left photograph the contacting is not really a factor.  $45.00 sold

#Romania 105 - Quartz (var. Amethyst):  Boldut Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 12.5 x 6 x 5 cm (4.9 x 2.3 x 2 inches):  Cluster of amethyst crystals from older finds at the Boldut Mine, most likely in the 1960s or 1970s according to the former owner.  There is damage to some crystal points so it is better listed as a good reference specimen of more historical value or to add to a suite of Romania specimens.  $40.00

#Romania 110:  Pyrite and Galena - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 6.5 x 5.5 x 4 cm (2.5 x 2.15 x 1.6 inches):  A chunk of massive sphalerite or zinc contains two layers of pyrite, one on top and the other on the bottom.  Both layers have varying crystal sizes with the top part of the specimen having larger crystals (up to 5mm or so) and the bottom layer more of a druse.  A couple of galenas are also present on the end with larger crystals.  Typical contact along the edges but nothing that you would not expect or accept.  $25.00

#Romania 107 - Quartz (var. Amethyst) with Siderite and a few Chalcopyrites - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 7 x 4.5 x 2.5 cm (2.7 x 1.8 x 1 inches):  A siderite and chalcopyrite base is host to a grouping of several amethyst crystals.  A few notable pockets of amethysts were found in the Turt Mine during production along with the galenas, calcites, and siderites.  The crystals are anywhere from 1.5 to 3 cm (0.6 to 1.2 inches) in length, with the largest crystal in the front just over 3 cm (1.2 inches) in length.  One crystal was broken off in the middle of the specimen, but actually it broke off flush with the siderite base and is not seen when displayed as shown in the upper left photograph despite its location.  The backs of the amethysts are coated with siderite.  $45.00

#Romania 111 - Galena, Chalcopyrite, and Siderite - Turt Mine, Satu Mare, Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 10.5 x 7.5 x 1.5 cm (4.1 x 2.9 x 0.6 inches):  A base of massive sphalerite and galena is host to a layer of galena crystals that have a scattering of chalcopyrite and siderite crystals on top.  The galenas individually are up to 1cm across.  Typical combination from this mine.  It appears that the very edge of one chalcopyrite crystal is cleaved, evidenced by a really shiny golden area in the upper right part of the specimen, and typical cleaving to galenas on the edge.  Overall, no major damage that affects the specimen.  $35.00 sold

#Romania 112 - Quartz (var. Amethyst):  Baiut, Gutin Mountains, Romania:  Measures 10 x 5.5 x 4 cm (3.9 x 2.15 x 1.6 inches):  Cluster of light amethyst crystals on a massive matrix base.  The crystals protrude up from the matrix up to 2.5 to 3 cm (1 inch plus).  The only damage appears to be confined to right along the edge of the specimen with a more concentrated area of damage on the back of the specimen in the lower corner - this is seen in the bottom right most picture.  Overall a good amethyst from this Romanian locality.  $40.00 sold

#Romania 113 - Pyrrhotite, Quartz, Chalcopyrite, Siderite on Sphalerite:  Herja Mine (Kisbanya), Baia Mare (Nagybanya), Maramures Co., Romania:  Measures 15.5 x 8.5 x 3 cm (6 x 3.3 x 1.2 inches):  A base of massive sphalerite is host to crystallized sphalerite that is topped with numerous clusters of pyrrhotite along the edge of the specimen, and also a cluster of quartz crystals with a few scattered areas of siderite and chalcopyrite.  For the size of the specimen, it is virtually damage free with the only damage areas I can locate being contacting along the edges of the specimen and a few broken quartz crystals in the quartz cluster.  The pyrrhotite clusters are up to 2cm across.  A fine cabinet to borderline large cabinet specimen from Romania in a good combination.  $175.00
