Pyrite Cubes (Loose, in Matrix, Penetration Twins) from Spain - The Geode Gallery

The nearly perfect cubes of pyrite from Spain, specifically from Navajun, La Rioja, in northern Spain, are very popular given their shapes.  Only a few other locations on Earth produce similar specimens but nowhere else than in this quarry in Spain is there such an abundance and the quality consistent over time.  Everyone asks, "Are these natural"?  The answer is YES.  All of the specimens you see below occur naturally!  The only thing that has been done to them is the dust/matrix were cleaned off and in the case of some of the matrix specimens, the cubes have been repaired (glued) into their original position in the host rock but nothing has been fabricated other than how it naturally occurred.  While repaired mineral specimens do detract from the value in most cases, this is one of the few specimen types that repairs are acceptable given the situation.

Below you will find a selection of loose cubes, penetration twins, and matrix specimens.  We acquire our pyrites DIRECT from Spain - you cannot get any more direct unless you went and collected them yourself.  The result is comparably much lower prices and consistent high quality.  If you do not see what you are looking for, please contact us as we have a large supply of all specimen types in all sizes available.

Single Loose Pyrite Cubes from Spain For Sale

Below we offer three different sizes of loose pyrite cubes for sale.  Please note - we have all sizes available from as little as 25 cents up to occasionally $40 and $50, with the change in price a DIRECT function of the size of the cube.  If you are building a graduated set of cubes from smallest to largest, and need a certain size, provide us with a precise measurement of the edge of the cube and we will let you know the price for a cube of that size.  The loose cubes below are our most popular sizes.  All cubes have the shiny faces.

#SPYR 89:  11.5 x 10 x 4 cm (4.5 x 3.9 x 1.6 inches) - Two 2 cm (0.8 inch) pyrite cubes are present on the front of this marl matrix plate with a cluster of no less than three cubes on the back.  Neat two-sided specimen!  $30.00

#SPYR 62:  17 x 11 x 6 cm (6.7 x 4.3 x 2.4 inches) - No less than eight pyrite cubes are present on the front and two more on the back side of this specimen, with cube size ranging from 0.5-2.5 cm (0.2 to 1 inch).  A very aesthetic large cabinet sized specimen.  $60.00 sold

#SPYR 63:  13.5 x 11 x 5 cm (5.3 x 4.3 x 2 inches) - A scattering of pyrite cubes measuring from 0.5 - 1.8 cm (0.2 - 0.7 inches) are scattered about a marl matrix.  An additional cube and partial cube are also found on the back side.  Some minor corner damage to a few cubes (one smaller one on the front and the other on the back).  $50.00

#SPYR 34 - 10 x 7 x 4 cm (3.9 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches) - $30

#SPYR 64:  9.5 x 8 x 5 cm (3.7 x 3.2 x 2 inches) - Five shiny pyrite cubes ranging in size from 0.5 - 1.5 cm (0.2 - 0.6 inches) on edge are naturally positioned in a marl matrix base.  The luster on these cubes is particularly good for the location as the cubes are in the harder matrix from the locale.  $25.00 sold

#SPYR 25 - 14 x 7 x 7.5 cm (5.5 x 2.8 x 3 inches) - $40

#SPYR 65:  7.5 x 6 x 10.5 cm (3 x 2.4 x 4.1 inches) - A single 2.3 cm (0.9 inch) on edge pyrite cube is found almost at the top of the marl matrix chunk with a couple smaller cubes (one on the front and several smaller ones on the back) also present.  There's a few ways to display this specimen and I like this piece because of all of the smaller cubes just sticking out of the back which shows these pyrites are natural and they add a nice touch to the bigger cube.  $25.00 sold

#SPYR 66:  11 x 6.5 x 6.5 cm (4.3 x 2.6 x 2.6 inches) - At least six pyrite cubes ranging from just a few millimeters up to 2 cm (0.8 inches) are positioned in a marl matrix.  The cubes have the highest luster for the location.  There are a few open pits where cubes used to be as well (the white areas you see in the photos).  $25.00

#SPYR 67:  17.5 x 10 x 6 cm (6.9 x 3.9 x 2.4 inches) - A very nice large cabinet matrix pyrite specimen from this quarry in Spain.  Several pyrite cubes ranging in size from 1-1.5 cm on edge (0.4-0.6 inches) are fairly evenly scattered about the marl matrix.  There are no major missing cube spots left and the specimen displays nicely but there are many options on how to display it.  A quality piece.  $65.00 sold

#SPYR 68:  9 x 5.5 x 5 cm (3.5 x 2.2 x 2 inches) - A single 2.5 cm (1 inch) lustrous pyrite cube is the main feature of this specimen but additional smaller cubes add a nice touch as well.  The luster is terrific.  $25.00 sold

#SPYR 44 - 8 x 5.5 x 8 cm (3.2 x 2.2 x 3.2 inches) - $30

#SPYR 46 - 10.5 x 8 x 4 cm (4.1 x 3.2 x 1.6 inches) - $25

#SPYR 90:  9.5 x 4 x 9 cm (3.7 x 1.6 x 3.5 inches) - A 4.5 cm (1.8 inch) pyrite multi-penetration twin is perched on the top of a marl matrix piece.  The twinned cluster was hard to photograph given the high luster on the crystal faces.  The only repair I can identify is a small pyrite at the base and on the back of the cluster was repaired, or the large cluster was re-glued on the top but nearly the whole of the cluster is intact.  Fine larger twinned specimen on host matrix.  $50.00

#SPYR 91:  9 x 6.5 x 5 cm (3.5 x 2.6 x 2 inches) - Two lustrous 2.2-2.3 cm (0.9 inch) pyrite cubes are partially twinned and positioned on a marl matrix base.  There are some bald areas on the base where additional cubes once resided.  $35.00

#SPYR 92:  15 x 10.5 x 5 cm (5.9 x 4.1 x 2 inches) - Numerous lustrous pyrite cubes ranging in size mostly between 1-2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 inches) are clearly visible and/or just sticking out of their host matrix.  This particular specimen came from a very rich section of the quarry evidenced by the numerous cubes present on all sides.  A few open bald spots and a couple of cubes have slight contacts or rubs especially on the back.  Multiple display options with this particular specimen that has no less than 12 cubes visible.  $65.00 sold

#SPYR 93:  10 x 5.5 x 6.5 cm (3.9 x 2.2 x 2.6 inches) - Numerous pyrite cubes ranging in size from just a few millimeters up to the largest cube on top (about 1.8 cm or 0.7 inches across) along with several cubes just peeking through the matrix comprises this specimen.  The specimen needs a stand for optimal display given its shape on the bottom.  $30.00

Pyrite Penetration Twins

All of the following specimens are natural pyrite penetration twins.  These types of specimens are not matched for their quality scientifically and aesthetically anywhere else on Earth on a regular basis and almost define perfection in crystallography with the sharp twinning and crisp edges.  Again, these are all natural!  They have just been removed from their host matrix.
