Mexican “Llano” geodes are a new geode being mined in Chihuahua, Mexico, approximately 200 miles south of El Paso, Texas. Jointly named by the ranch owner in Mexico and Geode Gallery LLC in late April 2015, these geodes contain hollow cavities lined with clear to very light blue quartz linings that ranges from all sparkly, crystalline quartz to primarily an agate/chalcedony and some also contain drusy coated quartz scepters of various lengths and thicknesses. Some light to medium smoky quartz lined geodes have been encountered as well. These geodes also frequently contain calcite in their cavities with some scalenohedral (dogtooth) and rhombohedral calcites sometimes being up to 1 inch (2.50 cm) on edge. Approximately 80-90% of these geodes fluoresce bright green under shortwave ultraviolet light, and the geodes containing agate/chalcedony also fluoresce a light green/creamy white color under longwave ultraviolet light. The Llano geodes range in size from about 2 inches up to 10 inches in diameter with 2.5 to 5 inch geodes being most common.
All of the geodes on this page are whole (un-opened/rough) Mexican “Llano” geodes. We guarantee at least 90% of these Llano geodes to be hollow and to contain a crystalline lining. For already opened Llano geodes, please visit our Opened Mexican Llano Geodes page.
